10 Leap Day food and travel deals that will save you money

Hotels and restaurants across New England are offering special deals in honor of Leap Year, which happens every four years when the month of February gets an extra day — Feb. 29.

Legal Sea Foods is serving up a deal on twin lobsters and local hotels are offering discounts for all travelers and even free rooms for those born on Feb. 29. One restaurant will host the ultimate “Leap-posal” for winning couples who want to get hitched on Feb. 29.

Visitors can splash, slide, and swim at Great Wolf Lodge New England in Fitchburg for less money by booking on Feb. 29 using the code LEAP to score overnight stays starting at $29 per night per person (plus taxes and fees). The deal is good for standard suites on stays from Feb. 29 to June 13. There must be a minimum of three guests per room.  

Travelers born on Feb. 29 can stay for free at Snowvillage Inn in Eaton Center, N.H. on Feb. 29 after buying dinner at the inn’s restaurant, Max’s Restaurant & Pub.

“You wait four years to celebrate your birthday!  Why not celebrate with other Leaplings!  Join us for dinner on Thursday February 29th and your stay is our gift to you!  Yes! Free!” wrote the business on its website.

After eating at Max’s, guests can choose from a king room with a view, a queen room with a fireplace, or a Carriage House room. The package includes a birthday cake and country breakfast. All “Leaplings” must send a picture of their driver’s license to the inn when booking.

Hungry for lobster? Diners at Legal Sea Foods on Feb. 29 can get twin 1 lb. Gulf of Maine steamed lobsters for $29. The deal applies to dine-in orders only and is not available at airport locations.

What’s more, customers who enroll with Legal Net Rewards on Feb. 29 will receive 229 bonus points, worth more than $10 in reward value. Bonus points will be added to accounts the day after enrollment, on March 1.

In celebration of Leap Day, all travelers can snag 29% off room rates at the Preserve Resort & Spa, located on a 3,500-acre sanctuary in Richmond, R.I. But guests must act fast because the deal, good for travel through December, must be booked by March 1.

Insomnia Cookies, which has locations in Boston and across Massachusetts, is celebrating February’s extra day with an extra cookie — for free. Beginning Monday, Feb. 26, customers can receive one free classic cookie with the purchase of any 6- or 12-pack of cookies through March 3.

What’s more, the late-night bakery is throwing a birthday party for customers who have Leap Day birthdays on Feb. 29, giving away four free classic cookies (a cookie for every birthday year missed), birthday decor, and party hats. Customers must show their ID.

A discounted winter getaway on Cape Cod awaits travelers who take advantage of this Leap Year deal during the month of February. Wequassett Resort and Golf Club in Harwich is offering discounted rooms to all travelers for $229 on Thursday nights in February plus a $50 resort credit. What’s more, guests born on Feb. 29 can stay for $29 on Thursday nights in February. A two-night minimum is required.

Planning to propose? The Melting Pot, which has a location in Bedford, will award four couples an ultimate “Leap-posal” experience on Feb. 29 that includes a five-course meal complete with rose petals, candles, and sparklers. What’s more, the winning couples will receive a year’s worth of fondue date nights.

“Leap Day only comes around every four years and Melting Pot – known for creating memorable moments – is taking this uniquely romantic day and making it into a forever memory with the Ultimate Leap-posal,” said Ana Malmqvist, chief marketing officer for Melting Pot, in a statement. “A perfect proposal comes down to the details which Melting Pot is providing — from the romantic restaurant setting to the roses and candles on the table to the Ultimate 5-Course Experience with the sparklers at the end.”

Couples must fill out an entry form by Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. for a chance to enter and the winners will be contacted by Feb. 22.

Dreaming of a Vermont getaway? Guests at Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Vermont — a country retreat located on 120 acres at Mount Mansfield — who book four nights can get 29% off their stay. The deal is good for stays between Feb. 25 and Dec. 24 and the offer expires at midnight on Feb. 29.

Save money on your next New England getaway through New England Inns and Resorts, which is offering a gift card promo for Leap Day.
