Kochi: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) registrar informed the high court that she had received a letter from the principal of the School of Engineering, requesting enhanced security measures for the Tech Fest, where the stampede incident occurred, and it had been forwarded to the university’s security officer for necessary action.V Meera, the registrar, submitted the affidavit on a court’s direction on a petition filed by the KSU state president Aloshious Xavier seeking a judicial inquiry into the alleged stampede incident.Justice Devan Ramachandran posted the case after three weeks for further hearing. The stampede that occurred just before a musical program in connection with Tech Fest, Dhishna 2023, on Nov 25, 2023, resulted in the deaths of four persons, including three students.While the petition was being initially considered, Deepak Kumar Sahu, the former principal, contended that he had sent a letter to the registrar a day before the incident, requesting adequate security measures.In her affidavit, the registrar admitted receiving the letter on Nov 24, 2023, and promptly forwarding it to the security officer on the same day, even though she was in a syndicate meeting. University security personnel and civil police officers were present at the site when the unfortunate incident occurred. They acted immediately, arranging ambulances and assisting in transporting those who were injured to the hospital, the registrar added.
