Newlands Senior Citizens Club prepares for milestone anniversary celebration

The Newlands Senior Citizens Club held its highly-anticipated year-end lunch at the club’s venue hall, situated at 161 Loopwest Crescent, Newlands West, recently.

The club has been in operation since 2002.

“As a club for senior members, it is expected that the mortality rate would be high and that one can expect to lose a member or two occasionally due to illness or old age. But, as is commonly known, the devastation wrought upon people in general and older people, specifically by COVID, left the club with a handful of members. However, the club has begun with renewed vigour to encourage senior people in the community to join and it is pleasing to note that the numbers are increasing as the weeks go by. The club had celebrated with pomp and splendour its fifth, 10th and 15th anniversary and was hoping to celebrate its 20th but to no avail due to COVID. The following milestone anniversary is, however, in the pipeline and all systems are being put in place to accomplish the feat in its appropriate time,” said the chairman of the club, Ishwar Dursen.

Over the past years, varied activities were planned and executed to provide a platform for the seniors in which their well-being, both mentally and physically, took centre stage.

The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to all well-wishers, donors and supporters for their philanthropy over the years and look forward to their continued support.

The club thanked Robin Meterlal of Springfield Electrical for his sponsorship of the meals and Mimmie and Ronnie of MNR Hire, for the sponsorship of the lunch, for the preparation and for personally serving the meals to the seniors.
