Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution receives Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation


Austin, Texas – The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has named the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution the 2023 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.

The award acknowledges the highest achievement in historic preservation in the State of Texas. It honors an individual or organization for efforts in the preservation of Texas’ prehistoric and historic heritage. It is one of 10 annual THC Preservation Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations involved in various aspects of historic preservation.

The Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution (TXDAR) is an active group of approximately 19,000 women who are passionate about historic preservation spread over 198 chapters across the state, Each chapter has a historic preservation committee.

TXDAR projects range from giving scholarships and grants relating to history and historic preservation to offering history essay contests for students, maintaining historic properties, maintaining cemeteries and cleaning headstones, commemorating historic events, creating library displays relating to history, collecting genealogical information and offering genealogy workshops, giving history programs at schools, preserving historic bird habitat and more.

TXDAR members volunteer at museums, genealogy centers, historic sites and many additional places of historic importance. Because of its size and the many projects it undertakes, TXDAR is one of the major organizations in the state that informs, promotes and engages people about history and historic preservation.

The THC Preservation Awards recognize and honor those who have committed themselves to saving the real places and real stories of Texas. The awards celebrate their accomplishments and exemplary leadership in the preservation of Texas’ heritage.  

The awards will be presented at the THC’s Real Places 2024 conference, April 3–5, in Austin and online. Presented by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission in partnership with Phoenix 1 Restoration and Construction, LLC, Real Places is the premier historic preservation and heritage tourism event in the Lone Star State. It offers world-class sessions, workshops, tours, special events, entertainment, and networking activities, while bringing together many different audiences under the banners of history, heritage, and preservation.
