She made it look easy and simple, and even longtime gardeners were stunned.

It was also the ideal solution for those with limited outdoor space.

This would work on a patio, balcony, or porch.

Shakema1mom (@shakem1mom) called her idea “vertical farming” and “vertical gardening.”

It would work pretty well in suburban backyards too.

“Let’s make a Dollar Tree vertical planter,” she said in her post.

She started with 12 three-tiered stackable planters from the popular budget store.

First, she had to adapt them and made three drainage holes in each pot.

Then, to ensure this vertical garden was of sturdy construction, she drove a metal rod through the center of the stack.

Once this was finished, the construction was stable and ready for the next stage.

She filled each planter with compost and potting soil.

She recommended small root plants or pollinators for her vertical garden.

SUITABLE PLANTS

There were several plants she said would work in her stackable garden.

  • Herbs
  • Eggplants
  • Chives
  • Kale
  • Peppers
  • Lettuce
  • Squash

  1. Banana peels, vinegar, and coffee grounds are often recommended as natural fertilizers.
  2. Dollar Tree sells four packs of seeds for $1.25.
