“That was not what I expected,” said Fisher. “The arguments get really bizarre.”
Fisher said the Facebook advertising stats showed him that most of the people who saw his ads were older white men, who tend to be more conservative than the overall U.S. population. Still, he said, he was surprised at how vitriolic the comments got. That suggests to him that objections to EVs are inherently illogical.
“It was just this sentiment that ‘you take my emissions, you take my freedom,'” he said. “It’s mind-boggling.”
In December 2023, Trump posted a social-media message that in part said supporters of an “all electric car lunacy” should “rot in Hell.” He previously warned that foreign competitors would ruin the U.S. auto manufacturing industry, costing tens of thousands of jobs. Other EV critics point out that the vast majority of EV batteries are sourced from China, and that the batteries themselves are filled with rare-earth minerals extracted at great environmental cost.
