Churchgoers celebrate Black History Month in Jackson

Local churches and organizations continue to celebrate Black History Month. Dozens of people visited True Believers in Christ Church Saturday morning to hear special guest speakers, singers and dancers celebrate the African-American culture. Event organizers say Black History Month reminds those to celebrate the past while also giving them a chance to shape their future.“It’s so important to me because of my ancestors. The word is ancestors. I went to Africa to Ghana last year. It was so touching, the water, the slave trade. I’m a social studies teacher, and I thought it, but to just see it and go through it had a special meaning to me,” said Darlene Lomax, event organizer. Freedom riders like Hezekiah Watkins were also a part of the event to talk about their own experiences during the civil rights era.
