St. Patrick’s Day parade evokes Irish holiday spirit

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade made its way down Main Street Saturday to ring in the Irish holiday. While the actual holiday is held March 17, hundreds gathered the day before in an ensemble of green, orange, white and gold.

Patrons from Dublin Square spilled into the sidewalks before, during and after the festivities. Green-dyed beer and dark Guinness stouts filled most open hands. Others stayed close to the curb to catch candy and gold chocolate coins.

Scores of bagpipes announced their arrival several blocks before they could be seen. Other upcoming festivals made their mark on the parade with appearances by Oktoberfest and Mardi Gras organizers throughout.

“We’ve been coming for about 10 years now and it’s always a hoot,” parade watcher Julie Hollands said. “It’s a good excuse to dress up, get out and have fun.”
